Vardenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence; inability to get or keep an erection) in men. It works by blocking a protein in the body called phosphodiesterase-5, which normally prevents an erection from happening. This medication increases blood flow to the penis so that an erection can occur during sexual activity. This medication does not cure erectile dysfunction, increase sexual desire or protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs; herpes, HIV). It is also not aphrodisiac and does not increase libido.

Vardenalfil should be taken orally, up to once a day, with or without food, about an hour before sexual activity. The tablet may be swallowed whole or crushed and mixed with liquid. If you are using the rapidly disintegrating tablets, do not chew or crush them, and take only one tablet per dose. Your doctor will adjust your dosage based on your medical condition, response to treatment and other medications you are taking.

Do not use vardenafil if you are taking Website nitrates for chest pain or heart problems, including nitroglycerin (Levitra), isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil, Nitro-Bid) or amyl nitrate (Poppers). Combining these drugs can cause a dangerous decrease in blood pressure. If you take vardenafil, you should avoid consuming alcohol and certain foods that can lower your blood pressure, such as grapefruit, orange juice, fatty or oily meats, cheese, peanut butter and chocolate.

Vardenafil has systemic vasodilatory properties that can result in transient decreases in supine blood pressure. These decreases are particularly significant in patients with underlying cardiovascular disease and in elderly patients, and therefore caution should be exercised in these patients. This medication has been shown to distribute into human breast milk, and should not be used during breastfeeding. Use of vardenafil during hepatic impairment or liver disease has not been evaluated in clinical studies. The safety and efficacy of this medication in pediatric patients has not been established.
